Jack Higgins Cup – BME v Sarfields

12th October 2019

The Jack Higgins Cup 2019 competition brought Ballymore Eustace and Sarfields together again, the last time was in November 2017.

History of the Jack Higgins

John (Jack) Higgins (1903 – 23 October 1955) played as a right centre half-back for the Kildare senior team.

Higgins made his debut during 1925 Championship and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement a decade later

At Club level he was six times County Club Championship medalist with Naas.

During that time he won two All Ireland medals and seven Leinster Title medals. Higgins was an All Ireland runner-up on four occasions.

Jerome Higgins, son of the late Jack Higgins, presents the cup to BME Captain Stephen Dwyer 2019.

The meeting of these two teams was Naas GAA, home of Jack Higgins. Perfect weather conditions and the pitch was in great nic!

Sarfields were first off the mark with two points in the first 5mins. BME were finding their feet when Stephen Dwyer secured the first score for BME. It was point for point between the two teams before Tadhg Barrett hit the back of the net. Scores from Simon Murphy, Micheal Stewart Byrne and Niall Murphy gave BME a 10 point lead at the half time whistle. BME 2-11; Sarsfields 1-04

Sarfields kicked off the second half with 5 points scored before reply from BME. Twelve minutes in Sarfields secured a goal narrowing the margin and in quick succession followed another goal for Sarfields making it only a point in it. BME had to re-group and pull ahead. Twenty minutes in the two sides were still level until scores from Niall Murphy, Simon Murphy, Enda Stewart Byrne and Tadhg Barrett gave BME a six point victory.

Final score Ballymore Eustace 3-19; Sarfields 3-12.

Thank you to Sarfields for a good game. Many thanks to The Higgins Family and to Naas GAA for facilitating the re fixture and for their hospitality after the match.
